Google Voice - How can you know ?

How do you make calls with Google Voice if you already have a land line ? How can you be sure that you're using Google Voice and not just your regular landline, to make a call then be surprised and charged ?

i have it turn on in the settings, the box is ticked yet when i try to use google voice on windows 7 i say something and then on the screen the words listerning appears, then nothing happens... is there a way to sort this?:(
