    Microsoft SQL Server

    Win7 64 bit Home Premium SP1

Secunia PSI tells me that Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition has reach end of life and suggests upgrading to 2008 version.
I do not find this software in the uninstall or change list.
I would to ask two questions:

    1. Do I need this software, and if I do not, how do I uninstall it ?
    2. If I need it, should I upgrade to 2008 version or higher ?

    Thanks,

It may be helpful if you tell us what you use Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition for?

    John:

You probably already know this, but the Compact Editions of SQL Server are often installed along with programs that require a small portable database as part of their operating functions. I used it in a recent program that I developed, and it is certainly better than requiring the full blown SQL server. Besides it's free.

    To the OP:

I would not uninstall the 2005 version of SQL Compact. It may have unpredictable results with your currently installed software. If you are able to upgrade to the 2008 version, you could do that, though it won't replace the 2005 version, it will just co-exist alongside it. No harm done.

    Thanks for the replies.

I am not using the software; I did not even know that it was installed.

True, you may not be using the software directly, but some software that you have installed on your computer may need it to operate properly. It would have installed SQL Compact 2005 along with its files when you installed the program.

In this case, I wouldn't worry about what Secunia PSI is telling you about SQL Compact 2005. Yes, it has reached end of life a number of years ago (IIRC), but there is no need to upgrade in this case, and as I mentioned in my other post, upgrading wouldn't replace 2005, it would just coexist alongside it. Pointless, really. If you need 2008 in the future, it will be installed by whatever program needs it.
