word 2007 won't start new documents at document1

Word 2007 won't start new documents at document1, and my search of my entire computer including registries shows no trace of any document1 having been saved.

Is there another way for me to fix this? I can't rename document1 if there is no document1 to rename.

Maybe you could run the Diagnostics:

    Word

    1. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Word Options.
    2. Click Resources.
    3. Click Diagnose, click Continue, and then click Start Diagnostics.

This could be useful - Normal.dotm may have been changed - good reading here:
Why is my "Blank Document" not blank?

I realise that the 'heading' is not quite your problem, but method 3 for Word 2007 might clear the problem. :)

Thank you! It had saved an altered normal.dot along with normal.dotm and I wasn't aware of having made it! Deleted the normal.dot and the normal.bak file and it cleared! Thanks again!

Huh, apparently my copy of Word continues running in the background even after I close all documents -- THAT'S what was causing the numbers to keep increasing! I just have to make sure to end word.exe every time, and I won't get those terrible numbers!

Thanks for all of your help!

Also important to note with Word, is that using the X in the upper-right hand corner doesn't really "close" the document. It takes it off the screen, but the document usually keeps running in the background. To actually close the document, you have to click the Office orb and click on "Close."
