    A potential solution...

    Hey guys,
I was reading this post the other day while struggling with the same problem of the Apple 'Remote' app authentication to a laptop running Windows 7.
After fiddling around with both my Norton 360 firewall and the built-in windows firewall for no use, i solved the problem when creating a port 'rule' in my D-Link wireless router settings.
Enabling the ports 3689 for TCP and 5353 for UDP (according to Apple's website) instantly allowed the Remote application to authenticate with iTunes.

i added a screen shot if anyone would want to try something similar with his router.

    * "trigger type = both " , "public type = both" refers to both TCP & UDP.

I had similar problems unable to see my iPhone in tunes. (unable to set it up as a remote)
Reinstalling Bonjour 64 bit version fixed that issue for me. You can get it here
Apple - Downloads - Application Updates - Bonjour for Windows 1.0.6
Be sure to select the 64 bit version

After all this time - just solved the issue!

It appears it was a problem with my Linksys WRT610N router. You are required to enable 'Filter multicast' under the Security tab in the admin interface. However, this issue was only effecting Windows 7 PCs...?

    Hope this helps others!

I have a Netgear DGN2000 router which doesn't have options regarding multicasting.

However, I did a fresh (retail) install of Win7 Professional (32bit) at the weekend and it still didn't work.
Following the advice above I re-installed the Bonjour service (32bit version), and then it started working...at the moment it is still working (I keep trying, just in case ).
NOTE: when running the EXE/MSI it does a repair rather than a fresh install.

So thanks "gluip" for the advice.

    Problem reoccurrence

As I'd suspected, when I updated to the new version of iTunes (9.02) the problem I had originally came back.
However, the re-installation/repair of the Bonjour service after the iTunes install has again sorted it out.

iTunes iPhone Remote and Win 7

So, I was experiencing the exact same problem - couldn't get Remote iPhone app to work with iTunes (Windows 7 x64). The iPhone would pop up in devices, but the code I entered was not recognized. Firewall was set to accept all traffic for iTunes on Domain and Private (not public). I did a network capture, and saw UDP 5353 making a broadcast, which my iTunes PC recognized (thus, the iPhone showing up in devices). However, when I saw the response from my iTunes box, while UDP 5353, it was not associated with iTunes.exe. Just to be on the safe side, (not trusting the associating between iTunes.exe and the reply) I added an inbound UDP 5353 rule and outbound UDP 5353 rule in Windows Firewall with Advanced Setting (MMC). But that still didn't work. So, I was sitting there looking at the packet capture and analyzing the traffic between the iTunes box and the iPhone when my girlfriend walked up, looked at the packet dump, and said "Hey, why is the HTTP post response going from the iTunes box to the firewall instead of the iPhone?" Sure enough, she was right. My proxy config was set to pass all HTTP to my firewall proxy, and the iPhone was not determined to be a "local" address, and it did not "forward" the request back to the local LAN. So, the initial communication is UDP 5353, and the iTunes response post is over HTTP. When I changed my IE proxy config to bypass the proxy for the iPhone IP (set as a reservation in DHCP), it paired up immediately and is working perfectly. iTunes uses the IE proxy config (as do most programs creating HTTP connection objects). That fixed the problem for me.

Just to verify, I added my Laptop running Win7 as well to see what would happen. This time the behavior was different as I did not have a proxy set up in that I could indeed pair, but could not play anything or connect to the library. I added UDP 5353 as a separate rule both inbound and outbound, and it worked immediately. Basically, you'll go into Windows Firewall, Advanced (authenicate if you have to) and create a new policy in Inbound and Outbound for port UDP 5353 Allow. That'll do 'er.

Hey, and welcome to Se7en Forums!!!

I dont think you're going to find a ready solution to your problem due to the increasing bad blood between MS and Apple... You will have to make a decision .. buy apple, or buy microsoft ... or use a variation of linux which will do what you want....

    good luck!
Um, there is no "increasing bad blood" between Apple and Microsoft. I successfully use my Macs with Windows all the time, and continue to. This is simply a UDP 5353 issue as I've already posted. For whatever reason, iTunes.exe is not registered as the service initiating the 5353 response, and thus, when the firewall is configured to allow iTunes.exe, it fails. I recommend that no one follow this advice of "you must decided" as you really don't. As someone else said, "best tool for the job."

    Problem solved...

Had the exact same problem on Windows 7. Tried firewall settings, disabling, nothing. Then I went into iTunes-> Edit -> Preferences -> Sharing, and then Share my library on my local network. That did the trick. Tried disabling again and I could not access, so at least for that was the reason.

    Cheers!!
