    Newbie Messenger Question

    Hi folks,

I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium

How do I know if I have a message from one of my messenger contacts?
I logged into my Hotmail account and I have a (1) at the top of my
screen beside Messenger. When I click on it the name of my contact
appears. But the thing is there is no message. Just the person's name.
Does that mean they have just let me know they want to
    talk?

    Thanks

now when someone messages you you should get a pop up that alerts you.
generally a message window opens, and is not easy to miss

The (1) up near it says messenger just tells you that 1 person is available on messenger.

Boohbah is correct. If someone messages you, it should pop up the message, normally in the lower right corner area of the screen.
