Which version of Word to buy

Hi. I bought a netbook that has Word Starter already installed. I am working on an ebook and am using the formatting instructions per smashwords.com in which you need a version of Word that has the bookmark function which the starter version does not. I am a WordPerfect user, but will have to spring for some other version of Word to get this done. I am looking for the oldest (and cheapest) version of Word I can get away with that will still work on Windows 7, and all I want is the word processor; I don't need the whole office suite. Any suggestions?

Microsoft Word 2003 is the cheapest, as far as I know. OpenOffice.org and Libre Office are great free open-source alternatives.

Thanks for the advice. To do the formatting the way smashwords wants it, it has to be Word. I do use open office on this little netbook since it's free and there's no disk drive on this thing. Great program, thus my aggravation at having to buy Word. Will check amazon for the best buy on 2003. Thanks again.

Bear in mind that 2003 will not open .docx word files...

Not an issue, just using simple .doc, but thanks for the heads up!
