A sandbox is like running a program in a very restrictive environment, a virtual machine provides a sandbox environment, since the host machine (the real one) and the virtual emulated one are totally separate.
Nice post Harry I have been meaning to try out a VM but haven't got around to it. But it sounds very much like the safe money feature in the Kaspersky ISS is a form of sandboxing - makes a bit of sense unless I have got it wrong.
I am not sure of adding two quotes in one post (I must check out tutorials) but Grits that looks like something I personally wouldn't use unless one of out top guns says ok.

John a VM is a complete computer OS running inside another on, the Host System, a VM could get an infection too. A sandbox is a "walled off" space within a system where one can open files or programs and they are separated from the OS.

A VM will act as a sandbox John. It can get infected itself but, if set up correctly, will not infect the host.

Some malware has proven to be able to break out of a sandbox environment, or at least detect it's running within a virtual machine.
