I just installed Puran Utilities and I think it installed some adware on my computer, snap do or something. Anyway I'm reinstalling everything (again) so what's the latest on Puran? If i follow the link in this thread and download the simple defrag part of it is that OK? I'm scared to risk it again. What's the best defgragger these days?

Run Adwcleaner :: AdwCleaner Download STU, report Snap Do to Brink so he can investigate and/or remove the program completely.

    Defraggler is good

By the way, Windows 7 Defrags itself so you don't necessarily need to defrag.

I don't know for sure if it was Puran, but it looks most likely. I'll send a message to brink anyway. I got infected with something before and ran every crapware cleaner out there but nothing seems to have solved the problem of my computer locking up after so long and constantly noisy fan. So I'm reinstalling everything. What's the best virus software these days, should I stick with MSE or go with AVG?

Antivirus is the least of your problems and Microsoft Security Essentials plays well with your system so I would stick with that. AVG, Avast et al, usually can cause problems with your system even though they may or may not be better at stopping the small amount of viruses you need to worry about.

The most protection you're going to get is from Malwarebytes and Superantispyware.

Noisy fan is not going to be fixed by reinstalling Windows btw. You either need to update your Bios, buy a new fan or change fan settings in BIOS.

Wouldn't unwanted bloatware cause my fan to run on high too much? It only really started doing that at the start of the year, failing this working how do I adjust the settings in the BIOS?

After installing your security programs I would remove the crapware before changing the bios.
Yes crapware can change all kinds of things.

If your bios were okay before the crapware invasion they should be fine after removing the crapware. In my opinion the bios is the last place you change things to solve these kinds of problems.

Do you have any programs installed to adjust fan speed with?

If after all this and your fans run faster than normal check your temp and let us know.

If all you're using Puran Utilities for is defragging, you don't really need it. Win 7's native defragger does an excellent job.

I disagree about using MSE. It has consistently been ranked at the bottom of AV reviews for so long, even M$ says additional anti-malware programming should be used with it. While no one AV will catch everything and one needs to have several anti-malware programs in one's arsenal for combating viruses and malware, running almost any AV other than MSE will improve your chances of keeping the nasties out.

Gator and the other s are right mate you don't really need the defrag and one way of checking it is gone when you have uninstalled the Puran stuff - if you are going to is to checking the HKEYs in the registry for remnants as I have found even Revo can miss the odd entry and Symantec too even after running the Norton removal tool. But before you go heading off in that direction make sure you do tis - I always run this after a clean install and before tweaking the reg

The only problem with Windows defrag is that it is scheduled for the middle of the night by default. You may need to change that .
