Can't install software after upgrade from xp to 7
I bought a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit. I "upgraded" settings, files, etc. from my Windows XP Tablet Edition, 32 bit, using the tool that came with Windows 7. Everything seems to have copied over, including my user icon, but my directory under C:\Users is blue and contains stuff that obviously carried over from XP, also marked blue.
Here's the deal. I can't seem to install (some) software, such as Java. Java, for example, fails to find a file in C:\Users\[my account]\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java. When I check the file is there. Apparantly it's a permissions issue, because if I log on as Administrator then I can install anything. And yes, my account has administrator privileges. I've tried opening up permissions on every directory in that path, to no avail.
One possible red herring, but it may be important: I had to give my new PC a different name than my old PC so they could co-exist on the network, and after I transferred everything over I re-named the new PC to the name of the old PC. I've scrubbed the registry, changing every mention of the "new" name back to the "old" name, but that didn't seem to affect anything. I've run CCleaner and other tools, too. Nothing fixes this problem.
I really hate to do it, but do I have to create a new user for myself and copy everything over to it? How would I do that without missing anything? If so, can I delete the "old" account and rename the new account to the "old" name (my name, which is why I don't want to change. If your name was Fred and you logged on as "Fred", would you be happy if forevermore you had to log on as "Sam"?) For now I'm using Admiinistrator for installs, but that's a pain I can do without. Thanks.
