Start menu creation error when trying to install Nexus BankID

    Hi,

on installing software just now I received this error message: "A problem occured while trying to create C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu" which is of course nonsense as the directory very much exists and is looked in every time Windows boots for items to run.

This has happened once before on trying to install Stardock Fences; that time the support person for Stardock gave up on it and I didn't follow through as I figured I could do without Fences.

This time, though, it's a critical piece of software (Nexus BankID) and I can't ignore the problem much as I'd like to.

    Any ideas why this happens?

    Thank you.

Try running the program as an administrator. Right click the shortcut and click "Run as administrator". See this: Run as Administrator

Alternatively you could try using the built in windows 7 admin account. Tutorial here: Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable

Thanks for replying TV. I ran the install file as admin. I always do this as a preemptive measure. As for the Built-in Administrator Account - when I check User Accounts in Control Panel I am the administrator. No wonder as this is a one-person household and I did the installation.
    Now what?

Take a look at the tutorial again. It creates a hidden admin account that has even greater privileges than the normal admin account. You don't enable it in control panel, you enable it through command prompt as directed in the tutorial.

Stephen, I activated the elevated admin account as per the tutorial and logged off then back on as admin and was faced with exactly two icons on an otherwise black desktop: recycle bin and defraggler.

Also, no way to start explorer...

    Hmmmmm.....
Can you open task manager and go to file and then new task (run). Then type in explorer.exe. That should open explorer.

If not try scanning your PC with malwarebytes anti-malware and see if it finds anything. How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to scan and remove malware from your computer

EDIT - Can you system restore back to before the issue?
