It might get around my objection, but versioning seems overkill for a home user. I would much prefer the good ol' storage and backup location.

It certainly does improve the situation.
i have backup strategy, imaging strategy and on top of that file sync strategy. why there is need to search for a reason? By the way i use real time mirroring not for security but for availability of same data on more locations. and its "cheaper" replacement for mirror raid.
i just suggested freefilesync as better free replacement of synctoy. it doesnt hurt to try and have option maybe you will like it (freefilesync has clean uninstall and so on, so it would not hurt your system).
i never suggested to use my sync or backup strategy to enyone. i just explained that synctoy has many limitations and in my scenario it doesnt work.. (it can not be that evident for simple user but not for the user who wants more).
why go to offtopic and discuss what is good for me?
vaidas,
Understandable, however, your knowledge of SyncToy's capabilities could be expanded.
The vast majority of readers on here don't have a strategy at all. My sincerest apologies that my forum ESP plug-in wasn't working. Far too many people don't know the old addage of "RAID is not a backup". That includes mirroring of any kind. omments are meant for everyone to read...not just one person. If it was for just one person...it would be called a private message.
So does SyncToy. You're going off topic (at least as much as you suggest I was). I agree, it's always good to have options...so why blast me for suggesting the defacto standard?
SyncToy only has limitations to a very limited group. Very very few people have a need for mirroring, where they actual mean to use syncing instead. As I mentioned above, I try not to make assumptions, but I also play by the law of averages. When I get my forum ESP plug-in working again, I won't make that mistake.
No one went off-topic. Most people coming here don't know what they need and often confuse terminology...such as mirroring and syncing. Again, I played the law of averages, and suggested the defacto standard. It does was 99.9% percent of people need it to do. You needed something outside of the norm, even to a very unique level. There's no need to get your knickers all in a bunch because of it. Spend more time here to get the feel for the forum before getting offended by something so trivial.
