    Thank you !

Reading that through again, I think I have to double click the file in post 45 and then the file in post 43 in that order.

Do I have to restart the computer between each stage ?

Final question - I see you are using the 64bit version. Do these files also apply to the 32bit version which I have ?

    Regards,

    Robert.

I would reboot after each. I think it applies to either.

That worked well - thank you very much !

I had to renew my username and passwords for my email accounts and stop the preview panel showing, but I can now "reply" to a newsgroup post.

One thing that still won't work though.

I have saved emails and newsgroup posts in folders which are not in Windows Mail (which is the way I worked in XP and Outlook Express).
When I double click on the emails, they open in Windows Mail as they did in Outlook Express.
When I double click on the newsgroup posts (.nws), they don't open but Windows Mail does.
How do I fix that ?

I looked at the "Set Associations" list in "Default Programs" and .nws is not there now. It was before running the registry fixes. I don't know if that has a bearing on the problem.

More help would be appreciated !

    Regards,

    Robert.

No idea regarding the newsgroups as they work for me OK. Hopefully someone else will know.

Thank you very much for your help.

Hopefully someone can answer that. All my newsgroups work well - it's only the problem with saved .nws files in a non Windows Mail folder not opening that I need a fix for. I don't want to have to drag them back into Windows Mail to read them at a later time. They are all instructions and comments on a scripting course and I need to have them well organised.

    Regards,
    Robert.

Can't help you there. I didn't even know it was possible to save newsgroups messages.

I found I couldn't set it as default until I actually had another mail program installed. Same with the default news handler. That wouldn't stick even after I had setup WLM as an alternative. I think Microsoft never meant WM to be active in W7 so it's no wonder really.
    Seems so.

I'm a new W7 user, got SSD and extra RAM for Christmas and then W7 64 Ultimate and I'm still setting up my preference (non MS) options ...

Getting there and learning all the time. So TY MS..........
