How does it happen that the same picture has 2 names in the same folder?
Because I downloaded the same pic of the same 1957 Chevrolet twice, maybe 3 years apart, and put them in my 1957 Chevrolet folder?

I downloaded the second pic without realizing I already had it. They are likely different sizes and have different names.

Maybe one is of higher quality than the other, in which case I would want to keep the better pic.

I'd love a sync program that can reveal all of that to me.
I've used this free software for exactly the same situation and it works fine. Was able to find same images of different resolutions. You can change the filter for the search based on your preferences.
    VisiPics
    Faster than most commercial software
    Uses dualcore processors
Highly efficient results with adjustable similarity levels
Easy to use Interface, preview your duplicates easily and pick the ones to delete with a simple click
Starts to display the results while scanning, you don't have to wait to delete your duplicates
Smart Auto-Select mode, to save time while deleting pictures
Tested on a 100.000 pictures 15Gb archive, full results in 3 hours only

Thanks, but all of my questions were rhetorical on behalf of the OP. Apparently, that got lost in the translation.

    See post 3.

I have no problems finding dupes.

Not sure if this is the right forum, but I am looking for a good program to search all of my many hard drives for duplicate photos and music and such so I can get rid of them. I have done searches to fond one, but most of the results are from 2004-2005.

    thanks!
In addition to the other suggestions.. some freeware sites likely to have pertinent programs:

    Free Windows Downloads - Softpedia
    FileHippo.com - Download Free Software
SnapFiles freeware and shareware downloads and reviews, trusted for quality since 1997

also it may be a good idea to sign up on zdnet
Technology News, Analysis, Comments and Product Reviews for IT Professionals | ZDNet

I haven't used it much lately. But when I signed up it was free. Some downloads are unique and only downloadable by members.

Also for syncing files there's a nice built in sync feature in FreeCommander
    FreeCommander - Guide
    FreeCommander - Download

There are some dupe finders that don't care about names or even file type. They totally depend on checksum. Like running MD5Sum. Might be fine for scanning a bunch of small text files. But GB videos are slow to calculate MD5Sums for. At least it's slow if you have 100 to slog though.

    www.nirsoft.net (SearchMyFiles)

This is the best one i've used so far, and it has many more options than the others i've encountered. It is called "SearchMyFiles," and you can snag a free copy at nirsoft's website:
    32-bit(x86) = http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/searchmyfiles.zip
    64-bit(x64) = http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/searchmyfiles-x64.zip

Have a look at this one,

Find duplicate files with Auslogics Duplicate File Finder

It's free but make sure you uncheck the toolbar offer when installing.
Is this still a good program to use and is it safe to use on a SSD ?

"Is this still a good program to use and is it safe to use on a SSD ?" If all it does is read what's on the SSD, how can it not be safe? Most programs are only as good as its interface. I've tried Auslogics' program. It does what it does. But can the user, me, do what was intended, organize and eliminate duplicates?
