So some of you might think I'm crazy... but I don't like the MS Ribbon interface on the new Paint and WordPad programs.
I find it very confusing and annoying, and you can do a lot more with the standard drop-down menus.
So I was just curious: Can you switch back to the old GUI?
If not, would replacing, say, mspaint.exe in Windows 7 with the one from Vista work? Or would it just give me problems?
Personally I love the ribbons, they make it much quicker to navigate.
You could try googling for notepad++ and gimp or paint.net.
I've got GIMP and Paint.net... I just thought maybe there'd be a way to "fix" the official one too.

I was able to take the Wordpad EXE from Vista and run it in Windows 7 just fine.
So if I were to overwrite the system file with that... it should give me the non-Ribbon version of Wordpad on Windows 7.
Paint, however, just says it cannot make a new image and closes.
I don't see why that wouldn't work, but remember backing up is always the key!
My 11 year old has been playing with Paint for a long time.
He just started playing with the new ribbon based version of Paint.
He created some "comics" with it and I have to say what he was able to do in just a few minutes with the version looked a whole lot better than him using the previous version.
In fact, at the moment he only has access to one Vista and one Windows 7 machine. He went back and did some very similar pictures on Vista and he just wasn't able to generate the quality that he is able to so easily with the new version.
I'll be the first to admit. I wasn't a fan of the ribbon interface at first. But, as with anything new, once you spend just a few minutes using it, you'll find you like it better and are able to do things more quickly.
Good luck. I just wouldn't give up on it so quickly.
