Partition Wizard

Curious to see PW is now showing the 1mb Unallocated space on the left - whereas it wasn't diplaying that before you performed operations with it.

That is correct , as when you install Vista /7 , the first partition is created 1mb in from the beginning of the drive.

nssgnim sure wish i had seen that movie on PW before I changed the size of Drive C. The tutorials I saw never showed changing the allocate space back to zero after reducing the size of Drive C. This mess would not have happened if I had seen that.

I have been thinking (a bad sign) if the three (3) unallocated spaces could be combined into one (1). This perhaps would solve the MBR issue.

Now if I use Disk Manager and convert the large unallocated space into Drive E and it becomes a Dynamic Disk, If i read the Warning correctly, I can NOT boot from any drive except Drive C. That is what I am doing now and E drive could be used for data which is what I intended to begin with. Trying to find just what a Dynamic Disk does is like pulling chicken teeth, I can not find it.

Another thought is if I do another clean install of Win 7, will I be able to combine all the space on the drive into unallocated space and redo the partitions from scratch. I hope the heck I can do that.

From where stand now, I see several options:

1. Leave it as it is now and wait until the final release of Win 7 comes out, then do a clean install hoping that all the space can be converted to unallocated.

2. Buy a new hard drive and go from there. Presently I am not wanting to do this.

3. Use the "New Simple Volume" from Disk Manager and let the space be converted to a Dynamic Disk. I am still curious as to what difference it makes.

SIW2 I did not want to respond (Not to worry - that is normal) to your last post until I had a chance to read it well and see what PW and Disk Management options are offered. The "Not to worry" got my attention.

I did not see a way to make D or E drives larger using the adjacent unallocate space in either PW or DM.

Disk Management really offers no solutions to what I have that I can see.

The only thing in PW I saw was "Set Partition as Logical" and "Initalize to MBR disk". The second one I saw as not being useful, however the "Set Partition as Logical" might be.

How did you go about changing your partitions to Extended?

I saw somewhere that I may have to go to the Pro version of Partitioin Wizard to get more options. I am not sure about this.

Do you know what a Dynamic Disk does? Can it be used for date storage like any partiton can? It would be nice to know this.

It is after 2 am and I'm tired, so any other comments will have to wait until later.

You don't need the Pro version - the one you have should be fine.

I can't see your attachment - perhaps you can post screenshots of PW main window and Disk Management main window so we can see where you are up to.

BTW - I think you may have misunderstood the video. Assuming there is Unallocated space -You can EITHER drag the edge of the partition OR use the little adjusters to change the space before or after (or you can do both ) - they do the same thing.

The video shows first dragging one edge - then adjusting the space after - that is in case the edges have not been dragged quite far enough - it doesn't matter - they both do the same thing.


Going thru the ins and outs of Dynamic disks is only going to add to the confusion - you are better staying with a Basic Disk.


When PW says make logical - it actually means make an extended partition including this as a logical drive inside it.


When we see the screenshots we can advise.

I will go back and look at the video again.

I had a good look at what options were available in both Disk Manager and Partition Wizard and I did not see any options that relate directly to trying to make the unallocated space to either extended or logical partition. maybe just me, but will go back look again.

I assume you like to use unallocated space after C to E. Here are the steps

1. resize c, use all unallocated space after c (drag edge of partition from center to right edge)
after this step, unallocated space will disppear from PW main window

2. resize c, drag edge of partition from left to middle (how far is depends on you)
after this step, unallocated space will appear IN FRONT of C not AFTER C

3. resize e, use space you create in step 2

4. apply

use similar steps, you could move your space around, but PW only move space adjacent to the partition, from your screen, unallocated space 150G is after C, your E will not able to use it unless you move the unallocateds space up.

First you need to get the grey unallocated space adjacent to the partition you originally wanted to expand - E.



Rt click C and select Move/Resize - you will see the grey unallocated space on the right, like this:



Use the mouse to grab the CENTRE of the partition and drag ALL THE WAY to the right ( so the space after box says 0 mb. If you have trouble with dragging it - use the space after arrows to finish off) :



Then click OK . It should now look like this - with a tiny bit of space still before E and all that space you just moved is now after E:





Now Rt click E, select Move Resize. Grab the LEFT edge of the partition and drag it ALL THE WAY to the left (until the space before box says 0mb - use that to adjust if necessary)




Next grab the RIGHT edge of the partition and drag it ALL THE WAY to the right. ( The space before and after boxes should both say 0mb), like this:



Click OK Click Apply.

It will take a little while as data has to be moved.
