Unable to install iTunes 10.6.1.7x64

Hi.
I have been trying to install iTunes on my 64bit machine for quite some time now. I had the application installed earlier, but I uninstalled it some time last year I think (can't remember exactly).

Now that I tried to install it again, it gave me an error saying "There is a problem with this Windows installer package. A program required to run this installer...........". I searched online, and came to a conclusion that there is a problem with the Apple Software Update. I couldn't find anything in my Programs and Features list in the Control Panel. I tried running Microsoft Fix It, to no avail.

Then, I stumbled upon this thread here at SevenForums Unable to install iTunes 10.5.2.11. Tried that solution, but none of the Apple software was listed in the list, and after the procedure the error message I was getting changed to (screenshot). After getting the first error, the installation would roll back and try to install again. Then I get the second message. Notice that the key being referred to is different in both cases. Then roll back, install again, and back to square one, the error I started out with.

The iTunes installer is a packaged installer comprising of individual setups of the various components - it can be extracted using winRAR. In alphabetical order, they are
1. AppleApplicationSupport
2. AppleMobileDeviceSupport64
3. AppleSoftwareUpdate
4. Bonjour64
5. iTunes64
6. SetupAdmin

The first two I was able to install in my first attempt to install iTunes last week, because my iPod was being recognised as an Apple iPod and I could sync with Media Monkey. I tried running iTunes64.exe but that failed too.

I am at a loss now. I really need iTunes cause I have an iPod shuffle and I need to change the volume limit on the device. I don't have the Apple earbuds with controls so I can't change the volume either, and it's really frustrating.

Hoping to get some help ASAP. Any help will be much appreciated.

You are running installer as Admin?

Check System file integrity: SFC -SCANNOW Command

If necessary try a Repair Install.

If you are still running the bloated HP preinstall which is itself a major corruption of Win7, then I'd join most other tech enthusiasts who Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to experience Win7 as it's meant to be. It is always better than getting a new PC, considering the effect of the pre-installed crapware and useless factory utiltiies which have much better versions built into Win7.

Yes, I tried running installer as admin.

SFC didn't help either. And I already did a clean install (earlier this year though). I really don't want to go through the hassle again - installing different softwares and games takes ages =(

Any other ideas?

I have this issue also, and cannot install some windows updates [silverlight security patch the latest].

I plan to try the ms uninstall/install 'fixit' shortly. I was able to get one problem uninstall to work with that tool, but its a lousy way to operate - having to resort to special tools to get ordinary things done.

in my case the scannow came up clean, IF it ran completely. the only message left was "verification complete".

as to the whole apple stack, i was unable to install or uninstall any of the apple components. i'm running win7 ultimate x64.

op - did you by chance update/install any Visual Studio comonents or .NET's lately?

I will, if there's no other way left in the end. I'll wait it out for another week or so. Exams coming up from Monday, need the computer almost at all times for ebooks

I have problems installing Silverlight as well, but I do manage to do it in the end by extracting the package and choosing the msi package included inside.
I get this error "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that in unavailable".

MS FixIt didn't "fix" the Apple issue for me.

As far as I can tell it only reverted my modified dlls and explorer back to the factory state. Just had to patch dlls again for the themes and use restorator for other dlls.

You can try this solution that worked for many Unable to install iTunes 10.5.2.11 . It mainly addresses the problem by using MS FixIt.

Work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 establishing a Clean Boot, checking the logs for repeat errors to resolve, utilizing System Resources to find solutions to problems, etc.

If you didn't follow closely the best practices for Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 (same for retail) then I'd start over and stick closely to the steps to get and maintain a perfect install.

I apologise for not having been able to reply sooner, but my examinations started and I couldn't get online. I just did a repair install of Windows 7, and that did the trick for me.

this is encouraging, actually. I've been reluctant to go that route. My 7 problem machine thinks its on a Domain, which it has never been, and that apparently has permissions/UAC/etc in a knot. MSI-installs fail by the normal route. conventional .exe installs for the most part work. setting up a new account is impossible...
