32 vs 64 bit software

I have a W7 pro 64 bit machine and have been wondering about 32 bit vs 64 bit software lately.

I have an Apache/MySQL/PHP package and for some reason, my INSERT INTO continues to fail in terms of not being written successfully to a mysql table. I've used the same code for a number of years on an XP machine and never had an issue. Suddenly on my W7-64 machine, there are no apparent errors, it's just not working so I'm wondering if I shouldn't try the 64 bit versions to see if that, in and of itself cures the problem.

Any thoughts on the 32 vs 64 bit software approach?

According to Microsoft, "Most programs designed for the 32-bit version of Windows will work on the 64-bit version of Windows. Notable exceptions are many antivirus programs. Device drivers designed for the 32-bit version of Windows don't work on computers running a 64-bit version of Windows. If you're trying to install a printer or other device that only has 32-bit drivers available, it won't work correctly on a 64-bit version of Windows."

I also went to the Microsoft Compatibility Center and it too says that MySQL Tools (Version 5) should be compatible with 64-bit Windows 7.

However ... (you knew there was going to be a "however", didn't you? :)) Depending on how old your Apache/MySQL/PHP is it may not be fully 64-bit compatible. You could try running it in Compatibility Mode to see if that makes a difference.

What failure are you having? Does it happens when run from Apache or any other client too?
Most likely it has nothing to do with 32 or 64 bits, but some mistake on installation or permission error somewhere.
