    CCleaner hangs Windows

CCleaner seems to have a big issue deleting compressed file folders when using Complex Overwrite. When I run it, it will stick to a file (Typically .rar / .zip folders) then hang my computer, rendering the only way out by force reboot or force shutdown. This happened ever since I installed BitDefender Internet Security 2013. When I use BitDefender File Shredder, it fails to delete these same files, but doesn't hang my computer.

Look I am no expert but if you know where these files are why not just delete them manually?

I usually save any stuff like that to Downloads and then just delete them there - then run CC to tidy up the bits.

Have you tried just a simple clean too - I take you are using those multiple pass cleans?

That's what I mean by Complex Overwrite. I feel if I delete it the simple way, too many bits will be left behind over time. I can't prove that, it's just my OCD.

Mate NO ONE is more OCD than me and I just don't worry about it if you let it get to you like that stir crazy comes to mind - just try the one pass and then if you want flip a three pass I'm pretty sure CC doesn't miss much mate.

Try this too AdwCleaner Download < only from Bleeping Computer though.

I tried an Advanced Overwrite, same issue. I have a feeling it's either CCleaner or the multiple passes that's causing it.

CCleaner overwrites files it deletes, whereas w7 just removes the index to it and the file remains until the OS need the space, then it is overwritten.

You might try to reinstall CCleaner. This is interesting, I've never had it hang but sometimes takes awhile on a compressed file. I use the 7 pass complex overwrite.

I've tried reinstalling CCleaner. I've waited 10 minutes for it before. The weird thing is, it will attempt to delete a compressed folder that doesn't exist anymore. If you want snapshots of this happening, I can provide that.

Just a thought Carig, if you have external drives attached via USB, CCleaner will clean it too and is very slow.

If not I'd give their forum a shout and see what they say. My CCleaner has some issues and took 3-5 minutes to run less than 10MB of data. It somehow fixed itself, but I don't know how.

How big are the compressed files. If you have Font Cache checked for cleaning, uncheck it.

I only have Recycle Bin checked. The compressed folders are ~10MB.
