Cant run setup.exe files on Windows 7

Ive tried installing multiple programs but as soon as i run the setup.exe files the browser window containing the file freezes. I am unable to close the window until i close it with Task Manager. My mouse pointer appears to be loading but it never stops. The exe file does not run even if i try to open it as admin.

Hi oliver1634, welcome to Seven Forums.
If this doesn't work, try with your firewall and / or antivirus disabled. Installing.pdf

    Welcome to the Seven Forums.

What happens when you save a setup.exe file to your desktop and run it from there?

What antivirus software are you using?

I transferred a setup.exe file to my desktop and my whole desktop froze up. The mouse pointer is stuck as the loading icon. None of my desktop icons are clickable, only my taskbar.

I have both Norton and Avast antivirus installed. I tried installing Malwarebytes to fix the problem but I was able to run the setup. I did a full scan of my computer and i found 4 threats but after deleting them nothing was fixed

That is not a good thing to do. They are probably fighting each other while trying to protect you.

Download MSE from here: Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows
(Just save the setup file from your desktop to be run later.)

    Disconnect from the internet.

Disable the protection from both Norton and Avast.

    Uninstall both Norton and Avast.

    Install MSE.

Connect to the internet and let MSE get its updates and do a quick scan.

Test running another setup.exe file. If it works, then it is your call, either stick with the free MSE, or uninstall MSE and install EITHER Norton OR Avast.
