    Well, it's a first step I suppose.

How do you have your audio connected?

Audio connected? I want a snippet of something that is playing, like before...

Forgive me for jumping in, but I may have a work-around. If your goal is to learn more about using your computer's audio, I know you will learn a great deal from continuing with Brink. OTOH, if you simply want to listen to nice rain sounds in the meantime, you can find some at

If any/all appeal to you, click on the "Export to File" button, and the sounds will be generated for download. You will end up with an .ogg file in the location of your choice. I'm sure there are many players that can handle this file type, but I used the free IrfanView.

Your recording devices show that you don't have anything connected.

Do you have a microphone or webcam connected with it's drivers installed?

    No.

Edit: nothing has changed since the last time I did this. I just reinstalled the OS at some point. Beyond that my setup is the same as before...

I get it that you want to record what's playing 'inside' the pc, can't you right click 'Stereo Mix' and choose enable? btw, when you outgrow window's own recorder, try Audacity.

Looks like I'll have to go the Audacity route. Can't for the life of me figure out why this is not working...

1st of all, Stereo Mix needs to be set active (& if all is well the bargraph will show the signal playing\streaming on the soundcard).
