    What Is Windows Live ID?

What is Windows Live ID, and the Sign-In Helper (or sign-in assistant?)

How does it work? Is it recommended to install? Does it have any downsides?

    Hello Tom,

Windows Live ID has been renamed and recognized as Microsoft account instead now. Your Microsoft account is the combination of an email address and a password that you use to sign in to Windows 8 or services like Hotmail, Messenger/Skype, SkyDrive, Windows Phone, Xbox LIVE, Zune, Office Live, and Outlook.com.
Windows Live Sign-in Assistant makes it easier to share documents, photos, and other files from Windows Live Essentials, and to switch from one Windows Live ID to another in Internet Explorer. Note that clicking “Download” means you agree to the Microsoft service agreement and privacy statement. Additional details below.

If you use Microsoft services, then I would recommend to create a Microsoft account and install the Sign-in Assistant to make it easier to use these services.

    Hope this helps. :)

It helps track you across microsoft services like MS messenger. I dont use Messenger and therefore have no need for a Live ID. I do not have the sign-in assistant installed.

When you create your User Account you also can Link your Online ID to this account and share with Homegroup through the network in Windows 7 with others compatible computers, at your home.
