Use Partition Wizard or AOEMI instead.

Partition Magic hasn't been updated since 2004 and is not compatible with Vista and later.

I use EaseUS Partition Master Free Edition and have been for years. It is free and works great.

Partition Magic is basically a reskinned Gparted, it is designed to run as a liveCD. That way none of the hhd is being used while you work with it.

The Partition Magic commercial program should indeed not be used with any OS after XP. The NTFS file system has been altered since Vista. Using PM with it will munge it up. The Gparted stuff has just assumed the name since apparently the commercial app is not around anymore.

I've heard nothing but good things about Partition Wizard. The iso bootable version is free and has all the features of the paid version enabled.

Actually, NO, it's not. You're confusing the name with Parted Magic -- which is a different product entirely.

PartitionMagic was originally produced by PowerQuest but later sold to Symantec. In December 2009 Symantec announced that they would no longer provide the product but they retain the rights to the product and the name. It is not compatible with any OS newer than XP.

My mistake, I was confusing Partition Wizard with Partition Magic.

Partition Wizard is a reskinned Gparted, much more colorful, same layout and functions, very fast. Good for the novice user as you get several warnings if your command well erase data.
