Want to upgrade Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 to 2012

Hope I'm on the correct forum for my question. If not, my apologies.

I currently have Windows 7 which came with Windows Live Movie Maker 2011. The default format is WMV.

I read that the default format for Windows Live Movie Maker 2012, is MP4, which I would prefer.

I don't see any way to "upgrade" directly from 2011 to 2012, but I did find the MS download site for WLMM 2012 at Get Movie Maker - Microsoft Windows

My question is this: Can I just download and install 2012 over 2011, or must I uninstall 2011 first?

    Thanks very much...

You can just install over. Your download will actually offer to install all of Windows Live Essentials, but you can choose to install only Windows Live Movie Maker (and Windows Photo Gallery which must also be installed with it).

Be aware that if you use Live Mesh, it will be removed and replaced with Skydrive

There is one change though that some users are discovering by unhappy surprise. Microsoft is replacing Live Mesh with SkyDrive, its cloud storage service, on the PCs of those who install Windows Essentials 2012. (Microsoft acknowledges this when users click on a link in the original post that says it leads to more information on what's new in Movie Maker and Photo Gallery.)
Here are Microsoft's warnings on what Live Mesh users should expect if they download Windows Essentials 2012:

"If you have Windows Live Mesh installed, it will automatically be removed if you install the new Movie Maker or Photo Gallery (available as part of Windows Essentials 2012).

"Microsoft SkyDrive will be installed in place of Windows Live Mesh. To sync folders from the cloud to all of your PCs, you will need to install SkyDrive on all of your PCs or Macs."

However, Live Mesh was supposed to end on 2/13/2013, so it may be a moot point

    Thanks A Guy.

Here's the part where I sound stupid. Not only do I not use Mesh, I never heard of it. Just Googled it, and would really have no need for Mesh or SkyDrive.

I looked in my programs list and don't see Mesh. Is that where it usually lives?

If I upgraded to Windows Live Movie Maker 2012, and Windows Photo Gallery 2012, and that automatically installs SkyDrive, can I just ignore or delete SkyDrive?

Is this the correct link to install Windows Live Movie Maker 2012, and Windows Photo Gallery 2012? Get Movie Maker - Microsoft Windows

    Thanks so much

PS: The only reason I want to do any of this is to get the default output format .mp4 in WLMM.

Yes that's the correct link. If you don't have Mesh, looks like you can just uncheck Skydrive as well.

Uncheck everything but Photo Gallery and Movie Maker you would be installing just Movie Maker and Photo Gallery.

I installed the entire Windows Essentials 2012 suite, less Family Safety and Outlook Connector Pack. Those were the only 2 programs that gave me the option to uncheck. The "Select Programs to Install" screen was slightly different than yours. No matter. Everything went without a hitch.

There is one thing I'm confused about. After the installation of the 6 programs, they displayed on my Programs List in the following way:

    Microsoft SkyDrive

    Movie Maker

    Photo Gallery

    Windows Live Mail

    Windows Live Messenger

    Windows Live Writer

From what I read, the term "Live" had been removed from the programs in Windows Essentials 2012, but as you can see, the last 3 on the list, still say "Live". Even when I open these 3 programs, they use the term "... Live" 2012.

It's almost a non-issue. I was just surprised. Any thoughts on this?

Live Messenger support ended though, replaced by Skype. I was unaware that the Live name had been removed from the others. I don't have any essentials installed. Outlook.com still has a "live" address. You had different options as you had other products already installed. As you say, a non-issue as far as the name goes. You should be able to remove individual programs though. A Guy
