Problem with changing the programs that open file types
In Windows 7 Default Programs, when I try to "set your default programs" or "associate a file type or protocol with a program, I select the program or file that I want to change and click on Change program I see two recommended programs which are Windows Media Center and Windows Photo Viewer. When I choose "Other Programs", I still do not see the program shown that will open the file type. [The type of file is a .par2 file and the program that opens .par2 files is QuickPar, which I have installed into Program Files (x86) in my Home Premium version of Windows 7.]
I then click on Browse in the lower right to try to get to the QuickPar program and I see "Search Program Files" in the upper right box of the "open with" page and in the lower right hand box it says: Programs (*.exe,*.pif,*.com,*.bat, *cmd) The only other option below it is: All Files (*.*) Then on the left side of the Open with window I click on OS (C), Open the Program Files (x86) folder, Scroll down to and open the QuickPar folder and click on the QuickPar.exe. When I do that rather than changing the file type to the correct program it just reopens the Open With window without any changes having been made. I cannot set the proper program to open the file type. I also noticed that the .ico file type in the Set Associations Window of the Control Panel says the program that opens .ico files is Windows Photo Viewer and the .icon file shows Windows Live Movie Maker as the programs that opens those file types. Can anyone tell me what is going on, if those indeed are the correct programs to open .ico and .icon files, and if not how to correct that? Of course, I need to know what I need to do to be able to Set the file associations correctly without reverting back to the Open with page. I would very much appreciate your help. I have never encountered this problem before. Thank you. |

Thank you
I appreciate the recommended links. I have no idea what caused the problem. Eventually, I just googled what I wanted to be able to do and found a free program that fixed the problem instantly. The program is called FileTypesMan v1.65

If anyone ever has a similar problem to the one I encountered I highly recommend this free app. Thank you again, Fish4Bass |
