    in the meantime my internet explorer no longer works and i cannot lo in to my skype as it keeps saying I/O disk error

    Have you tried running/installing the programs in question as administrator? That error code is a "permission" problem if I'm not mistaken.

    We have many fine tutorials here at the forums, here's one that may help just click on the link : Run as Administrator
