what is best free "start8" type prog that will boot to desktop in win8

Start8 isnt free but provides a win 7 start menu/button and boots directly to desktop

classic shell provides only the start menu for free

can anyone tell me the best/good FREE program that does what start8 does....?

    thanks

You may want to hold off until the Win 8.1 update, due next week, is installed. Its supposed to add more "desktop" functionality.

    However, I have Start8. $4.95 didn't break the bank.

8.1 update has been available for free via the windows store/updates.... it adds "boot to desktop" function which will work well with classic shell but not everyone has 8.1 (this is for customers coming into store with 8 wanting 7 functionality as they hate 8 and its start screen)

cant update to 8.1 either (take forever on our dial-up like internet)...just for quick fix

It is supposed to be brought back after the Win 8.1 update through a later Windows update.

Until then there's only Classic shell and Start 8.

I am not talking about the Windows 8 to 8.1 Update that was issued a couple of months ago, I am talking about a new "update" to Windows 8.1 that is supposed to be available on "patch Tuesday" this month.

One of the new, reported, features is it will automatically boot to the Desktop if it does not detect a touch sensitive screen.

    Right, I wasn't either Jack.

A major Windows 8.1 update is coming later this month, but neither of the new features will make it into that refresh. Instead it says they'll come as part of a "future update" of Windows later this year.

I didn't see that post. What I saw was a blog from Windows Secrets.
