It seems that they don't know why the problem happens for some people:
You really should update IE too. Even if you don't use it - update it.
I was able to get GameRanger to run using an old version of Flash.
Then I updated to the latest version of Flash and GameRanger still worked.
However, if I start with a clean install on the latest version, GameRanger fails to start.
Yep - like A Guy said, you need Flash for other browsers.

I had the same problem too, I have windows 8.1 and the last version of IE, I installed the flash player again and it works fine for me !
Adobe - Install Adobe Flash Player
Gameranger gave it to me !
Your problem looks like it could be to do with Game Ranger install options.
Take a look at this screenshot from VLC installer and see if it rings a bell:
If these checkboxes are not selected on installation it's not possible to use VLC to play video through a browser.
I suspect that this might be the issue for your software.
Other than that it sometimes helps to remove flash player using the removal tool from adobe then clean install flash player.
You'd need to follow all of the steps listed here:

Most people just run the uninstaller and forget the rest of the instuctions.
It's possible that your settings for Active X controls in IE are wrong. You could try resetting them to defaults.

Go to Adobe Flash Player Install for all versions and select your operating system. Then from the version dropdown menu select the one for Firefox, even if you do not have it. Download and install it.
This solved my problem, hope it solved yours too.
