Looking for a good, FREE file and folder shredding program

I've got someone who asked me and now I'm asking you guys.

A FREE program, reputable and safe, that can be used to overwrite files and folders to securely erase them.

Tried searching the thread above (Search This Thread), but nothing came up.

I suggest Recuva, made by the same people that made CCleaner. Does both recover files, and overwrite them. https://www.piriform.com/recuva

    Hi TVeblen

If you need a secure delete try Eraser (freeware) and integrates in your right click, you can also choose how many overwrite passes it makes.

    Personally I use:

    Blank And Secure

    To overwrite directories or files.

Sdelete to wipe free space on any drive as it usually only requires one pass:

SDelete - it's a command line tool. I use Run-Command 2.33 Alternative to standard Windows Run-Dialog to save commands to favorites and run them from the GHI.

    To wipe unallocated space:

Wipe data on unallocated space for free.

Also don't forget that if you want a file to be gone for good there are issues with System Restore Points or Volume Shadow Copies.

For SDelete there's a great tutorial by Brink to add options for it to the Context Menu of Files and Folders (option one):
Permanently Delete - Add to Context Menu

I've used Eraser without problems (SSD with few passes/overwrites). But I've read that some people have problems with it.
