Icons disappearing
I have a certain number of program icons set to always show.
They will show for a while and then disappear.
I prefer not to pin to the taskbar.
Thanks for any advice.

When they are not appearing on the system tray, are you sure the programs are actually running?
They are not running - that's the problem.
I have to then start them.
What is really confusing, is that the programs that I checked to only show notifications, do stay in the system tray.
Right - this seems to happen after I reboot - but certain program icons remain regardless. (even though they are not running). So when you reboot your PC, the icons are not showing in the system tray until you manually start the program(s)
What's the point in checking "always show" if it ignores it?
If you want those programs to start automatically, you're going to need to have them set to start upon startup. Otherwise, you will have to continue to manually start the program for it to be in the system tray.
Option 3 (or whichever you prefer)
Startup Programs - Change
Which icons are always displaying when they shouldnt?
The icons that disappear are : Yahoo Messenger, Faststone capture and Yowindow.
Also, it makes no diffeerence if I start the programs, they just disappear in a few minutes.
I just checked in msconfig and the programs I mentioned that are disappearing are checked to start.
Could it have anything to do with Temp File Cleaner by Oldtimer?
It seems to be Temp File Cleaner by Oldtimer that was causing the problem.
Since yesterday, after rebooting and not using that program, all icons are there.
I knew it closed browsers, but didn't realize it also closed certain programs as well.
Thanks for your time in answering this thread.
