I dislike Quicktime and Real player

Are there codecs for Media Player to handle Quicktime and Real files?

    Cluent:

I don't blame you--they are intrusive, annoying, etc.

But there are alternatives. Specifically: Real Time Alternative and Quick Time Alternative.

You could choose the "Lite" version of both of them if you want. The only difference is that the "Lite" versions do NOT include "Media Player Classic", which is my video player of choice.

You can also substitute "Quicktime Lite" for "Quicktime Alternative Lite".

    Get them here:

    About the K-Lite Codec Pack

You can also get the K-Lite codec packs at the same site. I use them with no issues.

There are several versions of the K-Lite packs. I use "full", with no issues.

Do the installs in this order, reboot after each step:

Uninstall all codec packs on your PC

    Uninstall Quicktime

    Uninstall Realtime

    Install K-Lite Full

Install Quicktime Alt or Quicktime Alt Lite or Quicktime Lite

Install Real Time Alt or Real Time Alt Lite

K-Lite has a lot of possible choices to make in the install. General advice is to don't mess with anything and just accept the defaults.

If you don't like Media Player Classic, you can just ignore it, but I think it's a fine app.

If you use I-Tunes, you should uninstall it immediately after uninstalling your existing codec packs. Reboot and reinstall it. Then remove Quicktime, reboot, then install K-Lite, QT alt, and RT alt.

That procedure has worked well for me for several years, but your mileage may vary.

WMP can play .mov files, but it doesn't include the Web browser plugin.

That makes sense. I was able to download the medium (not HD for some reason) .mov clips and watch them with WMP.

So basically for Quicktime plugin I have no choice but to download and install the whole Quicktime thing.

And for Real I have to download Real or another 3rd party product?

Free-Codecs.com : QuickTime Alternative 3.0.1 : QuickTime Alternative will allow you to play QuickTime files (.mov, .qt and other extensions) without having to install the official QuickTime Player.

Free-Codecs.com :: Download Real Alternative 2.0.1 : Real Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia files without having to install RealPlayer/RealOne Player

Real and Quicktime without all the extra garbage. Been using both for a long time without any problems.
