OpenOffice install crash - "Windows(R) installer has stopped working"

Hello all. I hope this is the right place to post this support thread.

I am trying to install Open Office, but every time it is crashing during the installation process. This has happened the same way for three different .exes from their website - 4.1.1 en-GB, 4.0.1 en-GB, and 4.1.1 en-US.

I run the .exe, click next on Installation Preparation, select a location to unpack the files, and it extracts them. Once it reaches the Installation Wizard window, it works on 'Computing space requirements' for a second or two, and then crashes, saying "Windows(R) installer has stopped working".

I have looked around a couple of help threads, and tried a few things. I have been into regedit, but there was nothing except '(default)' under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions. I ran 'sfc /scannow' in the command prompt, but got "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations". Can anyone suggest a fix? Thank you

While not a solution to fix your problem, here is something you could try to get a free Office suite.

I have Libre Office Portable, similar to Open Office, and the portable version doesn't install Libre Office.
If you're interested, it's available here:

I didn't know about Libre Office. I just tried installing it properly and it worked, so I guess I'll just use that. Thanks!

You're welcome and glad to hear that works.

    fyi,
Years ago Oracle acquired Open Office, Libre Office is an open source spin-off of Open Office.
