    After Win7 Repair Install & Office 2007 fresh install; no permissions!


    I had a run-in with MS Office 2007 that ended up (my bad I'm sure) necessitating a repair install of Windows 7 (64 bit) after a complete uninstall of Office. The Windows repair went well with the exception of a couple of drivers; easily adjusted.

    Then I did a clean install of Office 2007. It sort of went well. Except that every time I try to do something with it (like accessing Visual Basic to put my macros back in), it's telling me - incessantly - that files don't have sufficient permission blah, blah. Well, I'm setting the permissions but it's over and over and feels like every file in "Program Files (x86)/Common Files/Microsoft Shared/..." needs permission attention.

    Is there ANY way to avoid doing this over and over and over and...? And could I have avoided this by setting something different in one of the installs?

    Sigh.

    Do you get asked for the same file or do they change? Try setting the permission at the folder level?

    Locate the executable for the office app you want to use, such as excel.exe. It will be in Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\...

    Once you've located the executable, right click on it and choose Properties. Select the Compatibility tab, and check Run as Administrator. Click Apply and run the program. You only have to do this once for each app in the office suite.

    That should fix the permissions issue. (Hopefully)

    One other solution possibility is Tweaking.com's Windows Repair (All in One), accept defaults, add items 26 & 27, running in Safe Mode with Networking.

    Sigh. If I get back to that point again, I'll give those a try. Incidentally, it did seem that it was the same files seeking permission over and over.

    Now I have a new problem and it's so stupid I'm not going to bring it here. I'd really rather not wear out my welcome with you helpful folks.

    Oh my goodness. I solved the whole thing. Without going into detail, I had to do another uninstall of word and repair install of Windows. Then when I couldn't get Office 2007 to install at all, I decided to get aggressive figuring I was facing a clean install of Windows either way. So I used Revo Uninstaller Pro and did a forced uninstall on any "office" folder I could find. Then I tried again to install Office. And it worked! Not only did it work, I got my VB back and have made macros. So all is well there.

    Unfortunately it seems to have been at the expense of Acrobat Pro so now I'll address that. Separately.

    Meanwhile this one's done. I hope no-one else has to resort to these drastic measures but thought I'd include them in case it might help someone.
