    FreeFileSync 613 update

    - Norton reports risk "WS.Reputation.1"

"WS.Reputation.1" is a Norton invention, triggered if not many downloads of an app/program by Norton faithful users.
    - I didn't think there were any left
"WS.Reputation.1" has been a lingering thorn for the past 4 years.

    Duck search:- https://duckduckgo.com/?q=what%20is%...tation.1&kaa=p
    - results, lots of "WS.Reputation.1" threads throughout the net

I never allow SourceForge to update, preferring to download FreeFileSync Windows (local and portable version) from here ... and setup as portable.
    - no problems over past updates
    - fosshub.com are the only download link the author of FreeFileSync promotes.
    - sourceforge downloads are bundled with adware

The FFS website now directs you there. They gave up on SourceForge several releases ago but be careful with this one there is one PUP you need to uncheck.

    Thanks for that tip, Kado.

I've always used the "do you want to update now" link to SourceForge from within FFS, but noticed today that it is "unavailable". I hadn't updated in some time, so I guess that's due to SourceForge no longer being used.

So I went to FFS direct. I did catch that PUP (Optimizer Pro), but I have to say I'd never seen an optional PUP offered in quite that way---"basic" you get it; "advanced" you don't.

    @ kado897

    Hi Keith, :)
It was through this forum I learnt of FFS about 8 months ago
On 2-Sept last (5 months ago) a sourceforge download via FFS site was packed with extras
    v6.08 -- Virus Total score -- 7/55 -- all but one, "OpenCandy"
    - I have had one experience with OpenCandy about 3 years ago -- once was enough
    - so I put v6.08 to one side

Then in October last I received another sorceforge update notification for v6.09
    - downloaded v6.09 from all providors I could find -- 3 of them ... scanned with VirusTotal
    - similar experience as v6.08
    - put v6.08 to one side, I didn't have time to play around with FFS
    - as yet I don't have a VM partition on my internet access PC (a case of time is scarce)

The same experience with v6.10, v6.11 .. all put to one side

By v6.12 I found the FreeFileSync download page and read up on the portable option, by using an option in the "installer".
    - the "FreeFileSync_6.12_Windows-Setup.EXE" made me nervous, because portables are usually extracted from ZIP files, but luckily there were no hiccups.

So far I have experimented with a sacrificial folder and I just love the slick backup.

Two days ago I received another "update" notification from sourceforge for v6.13
    - ignored sourceforge link and went directly to Download FreeFileSync to download

    VirusTotal.com score:= 2/56 <<< 2 fails
    1. GData | Win32.Application.Dealply.H
    2. Symantec | WS.Reputation.1
(b------t ! Is triggered by low downloads count !!? FALSE POSITIVE
      ( What is WS.Reputation.1? | Norton Community
( thread dated 2010, problem persists 4 years later ... good one Norton

I probably wasted over an hour researching "WS.Reputation.1"
    - my irritation meter blew out and I just had to inform others with this thread

If I get the time in the next few days I will "play" with v6.13 -- again as portable

Thanks for your response, I was not looking for help ...
... just venting my spleen and hoping to warn other newbies that all is not bad, just watch ...
    1. where to download from
    2. Symantec "WS.Reputation.1" is a false positive , it is not even a threat
      - even Norton admit WS.Reputation.1 is not a "threat"
    3. be diligent when running the EXE file, lookout for adware
    4. I recommend the portable option
I will continue to rely on sourceforge notifications, because there is no other notification service that I know of. Although it appears FFS is updated 2nd day of every month

    Regards :)

Yes. I'm afraid they have gone over to the dark side. It's a pity because it's a great product.
