Questions on installation of Java's latest version

I have Win 7 Pro with Firefox for internet browsing but have IE 11 as well. I currently do not find any version of Java on the pc, but something I was running activated a popup telling me to update to version 8 update 60?

Question 1. I downloaded 8 Version 60 and when I tried to run the install I got a popup saying the installer cannot proceed with the current internet connection settings please visit the Java download help site.

Question 2. how important is Java and do I really need it - I am not a gamer and do not do exotic things on the pc. I have been using this pc for almost 5 years and this is the first time I encountered this need for Java.

    Any thoughts or suggestions.

    TIA Frank

Avoid Java if possible. It is nothing but a security problem. If you come across a website that asks you to install it, please post the link to that website here and we can investigate the website for you.

    Question on latest Java install

Tried to post this thread the other day but apparently it did not go through - will try again:

After trying unsuccessfully to install the latest Java to my Win 7Pro pc running Firefox browser, I am wondering if there is any valid or necessary reason for having Java on my pc. Any member thoughts on Java?

When I run the install I get a popup error message telling me that the installer cannot proceed with the current Internet Connection settings please contact Java support. Is FireFox responsible?

    TIA, FDM

    Hi,
And no not much to warrant having Oracle's Java installed especially if you don't know what it's for and all of the security risks that are involved,
Which is all Oracle's Java is worth = Security risks.
