How to fix error - 'ElanTPCfg has stopped working'

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP1
    System: ASUS K52F laptop

I updated my laptop on Nov 2. One of the optional updates I installed was a driver update, "Elan - Other hardware - ELAN Input Device". Apparently this was a mistake. I have two accounts - an "Administrator" account and a "Standard User" account. When I log into the standard user account, but not the administrator account, a dialog appears with the message "ElanTPCfg has stopped working". See the attached for the dialog details.
Why does this error occur? How can I fix? Or should I just ignore the error and forget it?

    Thoughts?

Howdy, I had this error on startup too.

Basically it's an error with the asus keyboard filter software that controls the function shortcuts on your laptop. If you press Fn + F9 (or whatever the "disable touchpad" key is mapped to on your laptop), you should be able to replicate it.

It's completely harmless, you won't be able to use that keyboard shortcut until you fix it though, and that error will come up on every boot.

To fix it you can try this.

    • Reinstall the keyboard filter driver. You may have this on the DVD that came with your laptop, but if you don't have it, simply go to the ASUS download page for your laptop and find the subcategory "other." Download the file "Keyboard Device Filter Utility for Win7 64 bit" and run it. Reboot your computer. The error shouldn't come up anymore (you can test it by pressing Fn+F9, it should now actually toggle the touchpad instead of crashing).

    • If this didn't work for whatever reason, you can also safely delete the folder containing the program in the ASUS installation folder, but only do so if you plan to reinstall the filter drivers immediately afterwards.

Kind of a simple problem but really annoying if that dialogue is popping up every day. Hope this helps you out.

Actually, I solved this problem by reverting to the previous version of the driver. Never again will I install driver update on recommendation from Microsoft.
