.NET Framework update, questions
I need to update Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 to the latest version. (4.6.1)
(I need .NET for QTTabBar program -- an addon for Windows Explorer) According to this ITECHTICS webpage, if I run the 4.6 offline installer it will overwrite my current 4.5.2. Microsoft's own .NET Blog advises to use the Windows Automatic Updates, - of course they wouldn't silently dump Win10 on me, would they ? ![]() ![]() FileHippo are pushing 4.6.1, I haven't downloaded anything yet and would prefer to do an offline install or update. My knowledge of .NET is zero so I would appreciate some expert advice. Thank you ![]() |

Hi Bawldiggle,
You don't have to use Windows Update, the offline installer will work fine. That's how I installed it. And yes, it will overwrite 4.5.2. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=49982 |

Basically, all the 4.X versions are just minor updates over the main 4.0 release. Any of those will simply replace the former version and software can use the one it was compiled against, or any latter without trouble. This is a little different with 2.0 and 3.5 though. Microsoft's own .NET Blog advises to use the Windows Automatic Updates,
- of course they wouldn't silently dump Win10 on me, would they ? ![]() ![]() ![]() Of course the will! Now seriously, you can use any method to get it (Windows Update, Offline installer or web "installer) and it will yield the same result in the end. And I expect the update for it to be clean of any malware Microsoft is delivering though updates recently, so if you're careful, it's a valid and safe way too (be careful if you don't want to get infected by the GWX virus though). My preferred method is the offline installer. Just download it from the official website and run to install. The reason: it's the only way you can get a backup of the install media, and if you have many computers you can save some bandwidth. FileHippo are pushing 4.6.1,
I haven't downloaded anything yet and would prefer to do an offline install or update. A frequent scam is for websites to offer unofficial mirrors and then infect the downloads they provide with additional installers (toolbars, spyware, antiviruses, adware, anything unrelated with what you want), in addition to providing out of date versions from time to time. There is no reason to ever use it, stick with the official developer websites, not just for this one, but for all software you use. In the case of the real, "offline" installer, get it from there: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=49982 The stub "web installer" can be downloaded here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/down....aspx?id=49981 4.6.1 buggy? Where does that come from? Do you have any references from serious sources? |

Hi,
I'm not coding and the only reason I have net 4... is because one program requires it otherwise I'd get rid of Net. |

I have had .Net Framework 4.6.1 since 1/27/2016 on both of my system and have no problems.
I'm not sure what uses it and when but it has caused zero problems. I personally would not get any Windows 7 update from any place but Microsoft sites. I have never looked for other sites but their are probable some out their in the world. |

Hi,
If internet explorer is not a requirement to get a Micro... product why would anyone suggest file hippo..... to get a product ? It makes no practical sense It might be different if someone had to deal with the Micro... catalog to get a product But in this case one does not. Call places like this what you want too and I'll do the same ![]() Just because one doesn't need a torrent client doesn't mean it's not. Call it a download host ![]() |

Do I really need security update for .NET Framework 3.5.1? Windows Update has been bugging me for some time with two important updates for .NET Framework 3.5.1. Do I really need to install them? I realize this may be a stupid question, since I am not clear on how deeply the .NET Framework has its tendrils in the core operating system. I have NOT... |
