Can't download and install Garmin Express

Garmin Express is a tool that enables Auto GPS owners to update their GPS. I've used it for a couple of years with no problem. Last week I attempted to update my GPS software and Maps. When I launched Garmin Express I noticed it was a new version (Don't know when it was installed). Everything went normal until halfway through the map install the computer crashed. After reboot, the program would not launch and this error message appeared: Service 'Garmin Device Interaction Service failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services. I contacted Garmin Support and their IT professionals worked for over an hour, without success, to get the program to download and install. Since they are not getting other complaints, their position seems to be its my computer that's at fault. Here is my operating system: Dell Studio XPS 9100 Operating Sys: Windows 7 Professional (64 Bit)Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz Installed Memory (RAM): 8.00 GB

All other programs on my computer work OK. I can't figure out what the above error message means (and neither did the Garmin IT folks). I'm the sole user of the computer and believe I have all the privileges available. That said, I'm not a computer guy and really need some help with this one. Thanks, Jim

    Hello Jim,

I use Garmin Express as well for my GPS. Hopefully, I may be able to help.

Have you already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program?

Thanks, Brink. Yes, have tried numerous times. So did the Garmin IT help team. They took control of my computer for over an hour, checking the registry, and numerous other things including the "fix it" program. When attempting to download, it gets about halfway and stops. Then the error message shown above is displayed. Given that I'm the sole user of this computer, I can't understand the error message. Appreciate any ideas.

Do you have any 3rd party AV or security programs installed that may be interfering?

I have Malwarebytes and MS Security Essentials. But when working with Garmin's IT folks, we disabled both at one point to try to get the download to work but it didn't seem to help.

Yeah, those shouldn't be an issue. At least there weren't for me for this program.

I suppose that you could do a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened to undo it.

Thanks, Brink. I actually tried that first with negative result.

However, our discussion just prompted me go to User Account Control settings. I set it to the "never notify" setting and successfully downloaded and installed the program. Tried it with my GPS and it worked. I then returned the settings to the recommended level, tried it again and it worked. I appreciate your help.

Just in case anyone has problems and the above doesn't work for them (as it didn't for me).

Get previous copy of Garmin express from:

    GARMIN Express old versions

Run it and in options unclick auto update.

That seems to work for me - hope it does for you.

    Hi wyattx2

Can you confirm what you did to get around this issue?
What is the "Never Notify" setting you are referring too?

I've got the same issue. I can install one of the older version but can't disable the auto updates, so it keeps trying to update to the version that cannot install.

    Thanks for your help.
