No downloaded set-up file will run :(

    Hey all,

Sorry I'm new to the forum, hopefully this is the right place to put this.

I've just upgraded my Dell XPS 420 to windows 7-32bit Home Premium from vista and now any time I try and install a program from the internet (even things like iTunes or Firefox) I'm runnig into problems.

Once I've downloaded any set-up file I click on it and the user account asks if I want to allow the program access. Once I click yes it thinks about it for a bit and then nothing happens.

I've tried running them as administrator and in compatability mode. I've also tried unblocking them in the properties and even re-downloading and installing without any user account settings or firewall but nothing works.

I even thought it might be a bad install of Windows so I formatted my hard drive and tried again but still no luck.

Can anyone please help, my computers basically useless right now

    Thanks
    Nemo

    Hi and welcome

I suspect you have a DEP problem. Can you go into event viewer by typing event viewer in search. Go to the windows logs>application tab. Look for errors involving app crash, app hang, and anything containing the name of one of the failed files (like itunes or whatever) There will be a ton of them. errors have red in the left hand column. when you find things that you think fit not the event ID and source. DEP problem typicall reflect themselves in event ID 1000 source 100. let us know what they are and if you need any help with any of this,

    Hey Ken,

Thanks very much for the reply.

I checked the event logs and you were right, there's loads of failed apps with event ID and task category 100. Incase it makes any difference a typical 1 is:-

Faulting application name: Firefox Setup 3.5.5.exe, version: 4.42.0.0, time stamp: 0x44e24a66
Faulting module name: Firefox Setup 3.5.5.exe, version: 4.42.0.0, time stamp: 0x44e24a66
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0x00021dbc
    Faulting process id: 0xda4
    Faulting application start time: 0x01ca6b9a839e7b74
Faulting application path: B:\Firefox Setup 3.5.5.exe
Faulting module path: B:\Firefox Setup 3.5.5.exe
    Report Id: c324b82b-d78d-11de-9892-001e4cccb01a

I tried the event log online help like but it came up woth no results so I tried turning off the DEP using the following code:-

    bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff

Unfortunatly that hasn't made any difference either, the app's are still not working

You wouldn't happen to have any other advice would you?

    Thanks again,
    Nemo

An upgrade is not the route to take. It leaves useless files on your system and can cause conflicts.

Save all you Documents, Pictures, contacts, videos, music, etc to a flash drive,

Be aware, you will need to re-insatllall your 3rd party applcations.
