edit and save file in the same folder?

I opened a file in wordpad from an external HDD,
and edited, and clicked saved icon.
An orioginal, which is in a Folder, is Not changed.
The edited file is saved in other spot in the same window.

How to edit a file, and save it right back in the same folder?

Make sure you click 'save as' rather than just 'save', then save it in the same folder as the original that you want to update. Assuming they have the same file name, it will ask you if you want to replace it, select yes and it should be all good! :)

You need to check your setting.

It is normal that it will saved as indicated in the setting for the location to save.

Most such applications do have preset location to save the file/documents.
As not all or rather most users, do not have much understanding on applications, so there is this preset location.

This is the preset location to save a wordpad documents; default saving. C:\Users\Eric\Documents
Hence, on many users computer, in this location, there are a lot of documents.

fluidmotion is using WordPad. I looked in WordPad and did not see an option to set a save location (path); hence, my asking you where that setting was for WordPad.

    fluidmotion,
I could not replicate your issue. WordPad always saves the file to the location that it it opened it from for me - even on an external drive. How are you opening these documents? Are you double clicking on them from within Windows (file) Explorer? Or, are you using some recent documents list?

Also, in your original post, what do you mean by "The edited file is saved in other spot in the same window"? Did you mean same folder?

Let us address OP problem before reading my theory.

I did intend to ask the same question to OP.
I also did try to replicate OP issue, as same in your 2nd paragraph.
No matter how, default is based on either in user document folders Or the location that the file is opened.

My conclusion is that OP is reading the size of the file.
Size of the file is based on the character, if no change, it remain the same.
Final conclusion is that the OP had found out the answer.
As most who asked and if found the answer, may not response.
This is a quick or shortcut to their problem
I encountered this type users, post in many forums and have resolved, but not bother to reply.
On this forum, there was one OP who "lazy" to check, instead post in this forum to give him the shortcut route to his problem. Link:
    Which updates should I install

    ------------------------------------------------------------
A simple &or lite version, is a program that able to do the job without much knowledge of the program.
And these type of programs do not use setting as a menu, but most of the functions are preset.
WordPad and Note are simple and straight forward, no knowledge is needed.
This is created for the benefit for user who is non computer knowledge.

Wordpad by default saved in Documents; but Note is saved to another location, separately.
These location is set by default to the user personal folder.
Hence in this way, the user only have to check on their own personal folders.

This design is from Microsoft, if i am not wrong.
The purpose by Microsoft do have some leeway.
First, for common user, this method is easy as user just search their own folder.

    There is this catch!
If Wordpad &or Note do have much setting, then they cannot sell their own Microsoft Office "Words".
This would not be to their benefit, as the lost in the sales on Office products.

    Then another catch!
Microsoft intend to leave it to other developer to create similar program on, ex. "Words" or similar.
Hence the price for other developer to take this advantage in order to sell their products, using WINDOWS.
That is why there are huge gap between small developer and Microsoft itself.
By letting other developer to use Windows OS, this in return do benefit MS.

    I think i stop here.
I based on my experience & opinion.
    Thanks for reading.

    Regards
    Eric.
