Error message when attempting to install software

When trying to install an update program from the internet, I received the following error message " A required privilege is not held by the client". This error message started showing up 2 weeks ago, but this update was directly from the publisher and not from a company like "Save on Shareware".

Can anyone identify the problem, and explain how to fix it. Thanks.

    Hello and welcome, @myron18:

In addition to the excellent advice already offered....

    1) Have you tried to DOWNLOAD and SAVE the file somewhere convenient (e.g. on your desktop) before trying the right-click > "run as administrator"?
In other words, I presume that you are not trying to run the file from a temp file in your browser.

    2) Are you logged in to Windows in an Admin account, or in a Limited/Standard user account?

    3) If you are still having problems after that, perhaps you could tell us the site from which you are trying to download and/or the name of the program.... (We could better assist you if we knew a bit more information and could attempt to reproduce your issue.)

    Thanks,
    MM

Thanks for your reply. I recovered a recent backup, and the problem seemed to be corrected. Today I tried to reinstall an older program from a disk, and the error message was back. I then changed my account from user to admin, and the same error message appeared.

There are some recommendations in the forums for changing permissions, but I'm uneasy about making those kinds of changes without fully understanding what I'm doing, and possible affects on other programs.

    Any comments?
