    Notepad++ question

    Notepad++ doesn't warn me if i close it and have unsaved files open.
    Is there a setting so i can get a warning to save before closing.
    If there is, i haven't been able to find it.

    It doesn't cause a problem, it reloads the unsaved file(s) when i restart Notepad++, so no data is lost.
    I would just prefer to be warned of unsaved files before it closes.

    I use Notepad++ portable, latest version.

    Notepad++ Portable:

    Go to settings> Preferences> Backup then uncheck the following.

    If you close a file without saving you will get a prompt.

    However it will not remember your last session so you need to look at recent files list.

    Thanks Chris,

    I found if i uncheck Enable session snapshot and periodic backup I do get a prompt for unsaved files.
    I like auto loading the previous session so i want to keep that enabled.

    I have found that with session snapshot and backup enabled - if you forget to save a file the original will not be overwritten with changes. However if you want to locate the most recent version of a file with changes saved you have to look here:

    C:\Portable Apps\Notepad++\backup

    EDIT: I mean your Notepad++ folder which will be in the location where you placed it.

    If you rename the files in that folder with .txt extension then you can find anything that you forgot to save.

    If i have unsaved files when i close Notepad++, the next time i start Notepad++ (Session) it auto loads the backup file.
    I don't lose the unsaved changes, Notepad++ knows which file to open, the original file or the backup file.

    If i try to close a file with unsaved changes it does prompt to save the file.

    I think it works really well at saving all changes and re-opening correctly.
    I would just prefer to get a warning of unsaved changes when closing Notepad++, but it works fine for me as designed.

    It's good to know where the backups are, in case i ever need to use them !
