I would suspect you will need to reinstall the program.

I have the lighter version Sound Forge Audio Studio (and use Sonar DAW).

Sound Forge is now owned by Magix

Thank-you. Yes, that was my first thought, but I no longer have the software to re-install. It turns out that switching sound-cards caused the problem. I have reverted to my Creative SoundBlaster and I'm back up and running. Thank-you for your help.

That's strange. It should allow you to change sound devices.
My Sound Forge Audio Studio has no problem with different sound cards. Sometimes I use my PC sound card and sometimes I use my recording studio sound device, MOTU 896mk3 Hybrid. Its OK with either.

It's certainly inconvenient. My Sound Blaster card keeps going south for no apparent reason, which becomes an irritation, hence my switching to the on-board Realtek card that causes the problem. It would appear - to my limited experience - that a dll file is missing, but I am no expert, and I certainly wouldn't know where to begin replacing it, so I've given up for now. I'll get my tech', who is also a musician, to have a look... when I can pin him down. Cheers.

ps. In an attempt to rectify the problem of SF not launching, I removed all the Creative software: which didn't help. However, since re-installing it and reverting to the SB card, the defect with it appears to have gone. I thought it was a hardware fault, but hopefully it was software and the re-install has fixed it. Fingers crossed. Meanwhile: it looks like SF was not finding the Realtek card which I'm certain has to do with the missing dll file.
