Very slow response to clicking program icons on desktop
I often experience long delays (a minute or more) between clicking some program icons on the desktop and the program becoming ready to use. The latest example is iTunes but it's happened with many others.
I also find that some programs occasionally 'freeze' and I have to stop them using the task manager, but they will not restart (from a desktop icon click) unless I log off and back on, or I sometimes have to restart the PC.
Is there any way that I can diagnose what is happening? As I write this, iTunes has just frozen, so I've stopped it using the Task Manager Applications tab. It won't restart, but I can see iTunes.exe *32 is currently active if I look in the Task Manager Processes tag.
I've now rebooted the PC (from power off!). This time, if I click on iTunes, nothing visibly happens but if I look on The TM Applications tab I can see iTunes.exe has appeared in the 'Image Name' column (when I clicked on the iTunes icon), so there's been some response to the desktop icon but the iTunes window hasn't appeared.
What other diagnostics should I use?
According to Task Manager I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium Version 6.1 (Build 7601 SP1).
