upgrading from Notepad 2 to Notepad 3, updating all Reg entires...

I have been using Notepad 2 for more then a decade.. sadly no new updates since 2012,
    BUT MP2 IS open-source
    http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html
    https://www.rizonesoft.com/downloads/notepad3/

I recently discovered that some one has picked up the torch and forked the code and
NOW Notepad 3 LIVES!!!!!!!!!!! lol :3

As a quick fix I simple renamed the old Notepad 2 folder to..
    from: C:\Program Files\Notepad2
    to : C:\Program Files\Notepad2_retired

and Notepad 3 renamed to Notepad 2, exe and folder names as a quick fix...

now I am using Reg scanner from
    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/regscanner.html

I was able to do a massive quick export of all Notepad 2 entires to a reg file so I can update all
    Notepad2 references to Notepad3

    • notepad2 <-- folder name.
    • Notepad2.exe <-- exe name.
    • Edit_w/_Notepad_2 <-- class name.

am finally(sorry tend to be a bit long winded, ie I explain in detail)
when exporting from Regedit it uses a @ for a default value BUT RegScanner uses a "" in stead.. I was wondering if there was any possibility of there being an issue when I export my updates back in..???

Can I ask a (possibly) really stupid question?

Why can't you install Notepad 3 alongside Notepad 2, get all your associations in order and then delete (or retain, if you wish) Notepad 2?

To me, that would be a hell of a lot easier than editing the registry and messing about with folders. Or am I missing something? Does Notepad 3 not have an installer?

While I did do the quick method yesterday or before... I did take take the longer road yesterday..
I made a copy of the Notepad2 folder which was the new Notepad 3 back to Notepad3 and its exe..

RegScanner, was instrumental helpful in tracking down all the Notepad 2 entries so I could change them what made it all a breeze was... I could export them all to two text files based on two searches

    • Notepad2
    • Edit_w/_Notepad_2

    1. I just edited them in "Notepad 3" change all Notepad 2 references to Notepad 3
    2. SAVE
    3. MERGE reg file

Voila file type entries done... more or less.. I did have to go back and find a way to delete all the old entries.. CCleaner helped a bit with this... and RegScanner too.. and some manual work...
