    Certain files in unknown type

    Hello sevenforums,

I just recently made an account here, so bear with me if this is in the wrong section or I'm doing something wrong, if so, let me know.

Moving on to my issue, as the title describes, most of my files are in a "unknown file type" (https://i.imgur.com/n5Yu2d7.png) these are some examples, however, keep in mind that there is plenty more. But I can run them perfectly fine, it seems the icon is the thing that's messing it up, I don't know? https://i.imgur.com/8ZtuAgL.png

I tried several steps and tutorials here and there, with a lot of googling as well. This is one (Default File Type Associations - Restore - Windows 7 Help Forums) and a few more.

If anyone has any idea what I can do, please help me out! I have extension files visible, might add that in as well. Thanks!

Windows looks at the file extension to make the association. That is, whatever part of the name comes after the last period ("."). So, if your file name is "sample file.xls", then the file extension is "xls". However, if the name is "sample file", then there is no file extension. Another example: if the file name is "sample file.xls.doc", then the file extension is "doc".

(Ignore the quotes unless I specify otherwise.)

Generally, Windows hides the extension, so that all you see in File Explorer is the name (the part before the extension) and the file type (the association that Windows is making with that file extension). If you want to see the extension, you have to un-hide it. (In Windows 10, you open File Explorer, then at the top of the screen you click View then check File Name Extensions; I don't recall how to do it in Windows 7.) Once you have un-hidden file name extensions, you can easily see which extension Windows has associated with which program.

The easiest way to set which program opens with which extension is to right-click on a file in File Manager, then choose Open With. Then tell it to choose which program will open that file. Pick the program, and check the box telling Windows to always use that program with that type of file. (For example, you may have a preference of which program opens ".JPG" files.) Then click OK.

Go through the file listings in File Manager, and make sure that all extensions are associated in the way you want them to be.

The icon problem isn't what was messing things up; it merely showed you what the actual problem was. The icons will show correctly once you have completed the associations.

    Hello,

When I try to open them with the association I want them to open with, it doesn't appear. Quite hard to explain, so I'll have to show you the issue with pictures.

The file I chose doesn't appear. Help!

This also happens with .exe files, they're supposed to be .exe but the icon for them still doesn't show. I have my extensions shown (https://i.imgur.com/F4SGHBm.png). Though, there is a few who do show, but some that don't.

Hi Everyone, For the hidden extensions in windows 7 go to

    control panel

type in folder options in the search box

click on folder options on the left

    click view

uncheck hide extensions for known file types.

Until the problem is solved, you can always open the program you want to use, and then open the particular document, JPG, or other filetype from within the program.

I think I found the issue...

When I try to open it with a different program (see picture), nothing happens, it doesn't add the program.

When I click on "Browse (Bläddra)", choose the program I want to run it with, and accept, nothing happens...

This program helped me out, thanks though!
