I agree the atmosphere over on the ten Forums is different from here. It's one reason I left there.

No worries, mate! I appreciate your attempts to help!

Jeannie: You could run Microsoft Office Online from within Linux. I use Opera to access it from 64-bit Xubuntu Linux. I use it for working on documents and spreadsheets which don't contain sensitive information. It is a quality program, with a cloud folder for storing your documents (or, you can save them to your hard drive). Best of all, it's free!

My preference is to use a locally-installed program, such as Libre Office. I am currently learning Libre Office, so that I will be thoroughly familiar with it when it comes time to abandon Windows 7 (2020).

If you are interested in trying out Microsoft Office online, go to this website:

https://products.office.com/en-us/of...-office-online

You'll need a Microsoft account to run the various programs.

The last MS products I will ever own are win 7 and Office 2010. I'm gradually weaning myself away from them. I do not want to use any cloud or subscription based products or services, both being the reason I've pretty much weaned myself from Adobe (Shockwave being the sole holdout).

Well, in case you ever find it necessary to venture into "enemy territory", and if you aren't working on any sensitive information, MS Office Online is an option. Best of all, you don't need to own it; it's free!

But I fully understand your concerns. I am in the process of ditching Microsoft. My goal is to have a Linux host system, with Windows 7 running in a VM, isolated from the internet, so that in case I ever need to use Windows for something, it will be available.

Okay i can get it to work using this extension:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/aoo...mirror=vorboss

It adds a button in LO toolbar. Copy selection from webpage (highlight then Ctrl+C)

Click the button to paste.

Alernatively check options shown when pressing [Ctrl+shift+V]

Here's what I get when pasting the webpage:

There is a caveat. I had to use Palemoon to browse and copy from. I also tried Opera (old presto version) and MS Edge but images and formatting were horrible.

Install the plugin via Tools > Extension Manager and browse to the .odt file. Correction. It's an .oxt file:

Hmm this is all very sad really everyone seems to be jumping ship and I guess I shall be only using 10 for general stuff like emails and problems of my own with 10 because I do feel uncomfortable answering stuff in 10.

It has been my belief that all along Microsoft had got the trots with 8 being (in my mind a not much better OS than Vista) not that good and they wanted to keep the apps look and I have to say that I do object to some of the take over of ones machine by them. It's ok like I said earlier if you have formal background in IT or are lucky enough to have the general intuitiveness to work the system then you can take part but I do feel like a rank outsider and also it certainly has taken away from me and I am assuming quite a few others any pleasure in doing anything much with computers - a real blow because electronics in general has been a life long hobby of mine.

But Jeannie to get back on topic my friend have you tried Zorin yet because I have an old tester machine I have dual booted it with 7 and apart from a few bugs in it that I guess will eventually be ironed out and it is a little like 7 in some respects - just an option I thought you might like to try unless you have already. .

I haven't started trying out Linux yet (that's going to be a major learning curve for me and I'm already dealing with enough problems right now. Zorin is at the top of my list for distros to try, followed by Mint. Wolfgang (aka whs, who has been MIA for over a year now, was the first one to make me aware of Zorin). I was going to use one of my notebooks to learn Linux on but, now that I have a 500GB boot drive, I have enough enogh room to dual or triple boot (actually triple or quadruple boot since I have a recovery partition for Macrium Reflect) and can compare Zorin to Mint to Win 7.

Actually Jeannie I thought you has said you have tried Linux sorry my bad. Zorin was suggested to me by AddRam and I found it quite good and like I said a bit like 7.

Now if you want to try a Linux distro without having to install it have a look at little ditty I did up mainly for retrieving data from drives for folks who have dying drives or a=even dead drives but you can use it as you like. It is Ubuntu which I find one of the easier distros to use Mint I found can get a bit convoluted.
BOOTABLE UBUNTU
Make a bootable Ubuntu disk Download Ubuntu Desktop | Download | Ubuntu
Set the BIOS to boot from the optical when the machine boots it will show you a screen with TRY or INSTALL > select TRY not INSTALL
When it is finished - it takes very little time you will get a screen like in the pic .
Open the drive you want > User and dig down until you get to the data / settings you may be able to copy / paste the material you want to an external source or other installed drive doing this.
I am not sure if it will but I have recovered tons of data etc using this method both on "dead" or just plain drives that you cannot get data from using Windows.

Or there is this Emergency Kit - save your files from a dead OS - Windows 7 Help Forums I prefer Ubuntu a tad easier to set up but this does the same thing
Now I did this up when the version was 14 I think it was but the same thing goes now.
The screen in my pic may also be slightly different.

Yes I am a but concerned that something is not going too well with Wolfgang because like you say it has bee a really long time now eh?

I also fear the worst for Wolfgang since it's been so long. One of the mods tried emailing him and got nothing so I fear he is another one we have lost.

Thanks for posting the recovery data. Hopefully someone will find it useful. I cheat big time, however; I maintain multiple backups. Besides my local backups (two backup drives per data drive—I keep my boot drive images on one of my data drives) and offsite backup drives (also two backup drives per data drive), I also have a cloud backup service that uploads new or changed data pretty quickly after it generated. Even if a drive should get totally bricked, which is usually what happens when an SSD takes a dump, I still won't lose my data. When my boot SSD became bricked last Saturday, I had multiple images on three drives could use for recovery. The only reasons for the problems I had recovering the drive were physical access (aggravated by a recent back flare up) and my computer acting all weird on me.

Using Win7 64bit and old outlook express. On emails from GF in Japan if I copy/paste it comes up as some musically notated gobbledegook. All other emails if I copy/paste are fine. I suspect the prob. lies on the Japan side but any thoughts are welcome Regards 2 all
