This program has stopped working - APPCRASH

A new issue I've been having over the last week is lots of applications display a "This program has stopped working" error whenever I close the program or sometimes just randomly.

    This is happening in
    Chrome
    Firefox
    Opera
    Photoshop
and a lot of other programs I use daily.

The details always refer to "APPCRASH"

The only started happening after I updated to the latest Firefox 57, but I can't see how that would cause these issues.

    How do I fix this?

I agree with you that it doesn't make sense that FF 57 is causing these issues.

Still, to test that, you could uninstall FF 57. Before doing so, go to Preferences / General tab, and tell FF that you don't want it to update itself. After doing that, go to Control Panel / Programs and Features and uninstall FF 57.

Now go to Mozilla.org, search for FF 56, and install it. It will remember that you told FF not to update itself, and it therefore won't bring you back to ff 57.

Bi Snugglepunk, welcome to the Forum.

If this crashing only started after updating Firefox 57, uninstall it & see if the problem disappears, if so then that program is the problem.
