CCleaner Active Monitoring Returns ... over and over, and over ...

Did I overlook this? I have minimal understanding of these system protection tools. Recently I have noticed ccleaner present as a process (CCleaner64.exe) in Task Manager when I am sure it was not there before. This led me to suspect, then discover it's presence in the Startup tab of Sys Config. So I proceeded to 'hunt down' the cause and I noticed the 'Enable Active Monitoring' box checked. I may be mistaken on this but I was understanding that one should only have ONE 'monitoring' system active and in my case I use Microsoft Security Essentials. I therefore unchecked ccleaner in the sysconfig startup, and in the ccleaner app I unchecked the 'Enable Active Monitoring' box, as well as 'Deleted' the ccleaner entries in the app's Tools>Startup. This apparently removed the process in the Task Manager. OK.

To begin 'fresh' I restarted the machine and all has returned, i.e. the process, the startup entries and the 'Enable Active Monitoring' box is checked!

    WTF!!!!! all help is welcome,
    -thx

    Please read here:

CCleaner v5.45 Pulled Due to Anger Over Usage Data Collection

I personally am still using cCleaner v5.32, the last version before Avast bought Piriform. There are links on the page above for that version. In the comments.

Thank you billmcct. That was very informative. I wonder why the admin has not mentioned this in the "Latest CCleaner" thread of his. I will grab the 5.32 version.

p.s. I there an free alternative with a similar toolbox and registry optimizer that someone endorses?

    You can try System Ninja:

    System Ninja - SingularLabs

Built by the same people that make CCEnhancer for cCleaner. CCEnhancer just installs the latest winapp2.ini file into cCleaner. Both cleaners use the winapp2.ini file.

if true it looks like I will have to have both tools (or more if anyone else recommends other free/better s/w).
