System crashed (with BSOD), system start-up repair, software issues

    Hi,

Yesterday my system crashed with a BSOD - just was able to read the line "not less or equal" at the top before it restarted.

After that, it got in an system start-up repair loop that repaired and restarted several times, after a few restarts, I hit F8 to get into the secured start mode, it worked, the system at least booted.

Today I just started the computer, the system booted directly into Win7, but most of my software is unable to start due to software exception errors ( like antivirus, cmd, slack, etc )

All of my individual settings of chrome browser etc are gone.

Only a few programs are able to start, Outlook for example, located on C:. Also, explorer stops working every few attemps to start software.

I tried to download and run the DM log software and start it as shown, but I couldn´t start the cmd. Software exception error.

Using Win7 Ultimate 64 Bit, on SSD, with multiple other HDDs connected.

Will check System Status with a diagnostics tool now to check the Hardware, especially HDD and SSD. Can you recommend one ? CrystalDisk is telling me everything is ok.

Can someone help me or at least tell me what has happened or what that start-up-repair might have destroyed ? Never had a case like this. Is there a clean re-install of Win7 necessary, or can this be fixed ?

    Thanks in advance!

System restore, or your most recent backup image.

    Some questions!

[1] Have you installed any new hardware, software or updates prior to this happening?
[2] Have you tried booting with just the OS drive attached?
[3] Have you got your data and software on different drives to the OS?
[4] Are there any restore points that you could try?
[5] Have you tried running chkdsk - Check Disk?
[6] Have you tried running SFC - System File Checker?
[7] Have you got a recent system image that you could use?

If you can, post the BSOD report. This link will show you how to => BSOD - Posting Instructions

A repair install might be needed, or at worst, a complete re-install. This obviously depends on whether we are able to sort this out!. We can cover these in more detail later including the procedures used.

    I hope this helps!

    Hi,

    Thanks for your replies !

    1. I did not install new hardware.

    2. No , it boots normal now with everything attached.

    3. All data is stored on a software mirror raid, and backup on several external had.

    4. To my surprise, there a no system restore points available to restore.

5/6. No, just checked crystaldisk for now.

    7. I have my data saved on several disks and a software RAID, no backup image.

A repair install would be favourized if software works normal after that - I have to 're install completely, because software errors would not be gone after repair install, I can do this, it is not the problem, just have to re-install software then.

    All data is safely stored.

Questions now for me are - is a repair install the option that would also fix software issues ? Or is the complete 're install the better option ?

And - is this problem hardware related, and how can I check this ?

    Thank you !

A repair install differs from a clean install in the fact that it ONLY replaces the corrupted OS with a new fresh copy. This means that ALL your User Accounts, Folders, Files, Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, Data Files, Icons, and any installed programs are left intact. So this option is probably not the way to go!

As a last resort then yes!

You will need your Product Key for the version of Windows that you are re-installing. This is the ONLY version that you will be able to activate. On a laptop, it will either be on a sticker on the bottom, or in the battery compartment. If the sticker is too worn to read, or there isn't one, then you can retrieve it by either using Belarc Advisor or Magic Jelly Bean. Write this Product Key down and keep it in a safe place.

IMPORTANT: Make sure that you backup ALL your essential files to an external HDD or USB BEFORE you start the clean install. This is because during the clean install process, ALL your User Accounts, Folders, Files, Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, Data Files, Icons, and any installed programs will be erased and become irretrievable.

IMPORTANT: REMOVE any connected drives BEFORE you start the clean install.

SUGGESTION: Once you have your OS updated and running the way you like it, make a system image. This way, if things go wrong in the future, you will be able to restore your OS back to the exact same state that it is now in a very short time. There are two imaging programs which are very popular among members here, the first is hAOMEI Backupper Standard [FREE], and the second is Macrium Reflect [FREE].

    I hope this helps!

    Ok , will do a re-install then.

How will it work with software RAID? Will it be detected after re install? Or do I have to somehow prepare for that ?

Would transfer data that is not back upped yet to that RAID, because my 2 external back up drives are not at the same location as the computer, because of theft and fire protection.

Everything not on the C-drive should be safe I think, as there is no encryption running.

I cannot comment on that as I have never used it!
I am sure that there are members here on the forum that will be able to advise you on this.
