That was a typo on my part. I was using regedit.
I'm not using a USB cable when using USB. I plugging USB flash drives directly into the ports (this is a notebook computer). I do use a cable when connecting SATA SSDs to the computer (and I've used several different cables for that). Cables are not the problem. The lack of the window is a recent new behavior. This is the only window that shows the drives when plugged in (beside the icon in the tray) and the only way I can access a USB drive now (drive G:):

Lady F, On a search of the web I did see where a corrupted user profile could cause this problem, so that maybe worth investigating.
I'm not being sarcastic. I'm pleading for help. Seriously! I frequently need very simple, complete, step by step directions (having learning difficulties often makes simple things complicated for me). While I know a lot about computers, there is still a lot I do not know so one can't assume I know certain things, thus the need to treat me like a child or a demented senior.

I can't answer how or why it might fix your problem, but it was one solution I did see when searching for a fix.
